Dc Zones Hero

The Discovery Center’s 11,000 square-foot space is home to five distinct areas, or “zones” of exploration. Each provides an opportunity to learn about our Northern environment and looks to answer the question of why Alaska looks the way it does.

Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older.

Local knowledge of how to survive and thrive in the North has developed through observation, inquiry and experimentation. What can Northern innovations teach us about Alaska's diverse environments and extreme climates?

Alaska’s landscapes are constantly changing. In the land zone, discover how wind and water erode and transform rock and soil. Activities include earthquake simulators and volcanic eruption demonstrations.

Alaska is home to diverse plant and animal life. In the Life Zone, patrons learn about certain Alaska species, such as salmon, and how they're important to the ecosystems of Alaska.

Northern latitudes provide a distinct view of the sky. Experience the extreme seasons of light and dark in Alaska. Interested in the aurora borealis? Learn more about them in the Sky Zone.

In the Water Zone, the Discovery Center presents examples of water's three forms: liquid, solid and gas. Learn about Alaska's diverse environments, from its flowing rivers, to its solid glaciers and gaseous clouds.
