Mr. Whitekeys: "The Voyage of The Alaska Union"

6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30

UAA Recital Hall, Fine Arts Building, University of Alaska Anchorage, 3700 Alumni Dr.

In-Person Event

If the Whale Fat Follies video snippets in the Tricksters and Sourdoughs exhibition have made you sentimental about one of Alaska's pop culture icons, you'll want to catch Mr. Whitekeys in his latest incarnation as Alaska historian when he gives a talk about his new Alaska Gold Rush book “The Voyage of The Alaska Union” at UAA's Recital Hall. Lavishly illustrated with 100 of Charles Harris's photographs, the book relies on century-old diaries, letters, manuscripts, and newspaper accounts that tell the story in the words of the men who were on the Koyukuk in 1898. He says, "It's the story of tough men who survived with what they had. It may be 70 below, and you may have forgotten to pack your tent on a hundred-mile trek, but if you had doughnuts, everything was just fine."
