In-Person Event

Anyone who's ever dreamed of making their own zine can join Seed Lab for a variety of public workshops to do just that. Starting April 5, local artists and writers will lead activities, teaching different techniques and mediums to help participants make original artwork and the printed zine of their dreams. Activities will be for all ages and skill levels and will include letterpress, collage, and more. Free.

Etch-a-Sketch Hangout with Brian Hutton
5 - 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave.
Drop in and join this Etch-A-Sketch artist for a good time drawing using this classic toy. Brian Hutton will have prompts and pointers, and we will have a photo station for documenting your masterpieces. Brian will be there to help Friday, but the Etch-A-Sketches will be around for the whole event.

Start Creating with Lee Post
7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, April 5, Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave.
Want to make zines, but don’t know what you’ll do and how to start creating? Spark your imagination and bust through any temporary writer’s block with cartoonist Lee Post. He’s got fun solo activities to help clarify your thoughts, stacks of story cubes and unusual prompts to help craft stories, and a space for folks to chat and collabroate. Open to all ages.

Intro to Illustration & Line Work: Alaska Landscape with Karolína Zákravská
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave.
Join this introduction to the process of creating illustrated pieces using watercolors & markers. The course will cover subject selection, initial sketch creation, research phase breakdown, color theory, and line work fundamentals. We will have watercolor paper & watercolors, markers and ink available. Participants are required to stay for the entire duration; not suitable for walk-ins. Register 

Memoirs and Journeys with Lee Post
1 - 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave.
Join cartoonist Lee Post to explore the building blocks of storytelling, learn some of the history behind the form, play with story prompts, and draft and create a story of your own. Fun for youth, adults and families of all ages. Youth in ages 7+ will need an adult to join them on their storytelling adventure.

Activism & Zines with Alaska Rising Tide with Jessi Thornton & Brandon Hill
6 - 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave.
In this workshop Brandon & Jessi will share the process of creating their collaborative zine, “Cold Front.” The goal of “Cold Front” is to share reflections from the decolonization and climate justice movements working in Alaska through written pieces, art, poetry, photography and creative work that captures our communities and the local climate justice movement. Participants will receive a copy and leave with a plan for your own zine campaign. Register
