Self-Guided Field Trips
Self-Guided School Group Experiences
Lead your students on an exploration of our galleries and exhibitions. Teacher-guided groups must register in advance and attend a mandatory museum orientation at the start of the field trip, regardless of group size. A field trip coordinator will help you create a museum visit itinerary that best meets your learning objectives.
We offer self-guided field trips on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday starting at 10 a.m. Self-guided Field Trips are $3 per student and $3 per chaperone. Educators and staff may receive free admission with their staff ID badge. Title 1 school groups are $3 per student. Chaperones, educators, and staff receive free admission.
Field trips must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance of the requested program date. All Field trips require 1 chaperone per 5 elementary and middle school students and 1 chaperone for every 10 high school students.
Self-Guided Field Trip Resources
A few simple ideas for fostering students’ imagination and critical thinking as you guide them through the galleries:
- Look closely. Take time to observe the objects and notice together what is visually evident. Lots can be learned just from what you see.
- Encourage drawing. Provide materials for students to sketch objects or installations. Lead conversation about what was observed through drawing.
- Invite story-telling. Welcome students to discuss how objects and ideas might connect to their own lives and experiences.
- Inspire creativity. The museum is a great place to experiment with dynamic approaches to looking and learning. Observe objects from different angles, draw comics, enliven a science concept, write poems inspired by examining a contemporary artwork
