New Anchorage Museum Offerings Celebrate Board Culture, Natural Light Phenomena, and Teens’ Perspectives on Climate Change
May 3, 2024
ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
WHAT: A motion-activated sculpture; a collection of teen-created, climate-change-themed memes, writings, zines, and signs; and an exhibition celebrating snowboard and skateboard culture in Alaska kick off the Anchorage Museum’s summer season starting Friday, May 3, 2024.
- Trailing, a mesmerizing sculpture by artists Alia Shahab and Michel Gignac, invites visitors to experience the beauty of otherworldly light phenomena through an interactive and immersive installation. Thousands of fiberoptic cables come to life with a rich green glow as visitors move through the space, evoking the stunning visual effects found in nature such as bioluminescent plankton and the aurora borealis.
- Northern Boarders showcases the unique and vibrant board culture in Alaska, featuring archival images, street photography, films, and boards designed by local artists. From snowboarding down mountain ridges to skateboarding in urban settings, Alaska's boarders bring their own style and energy to the streets and slopes, and this exhibition celebrates their creativity and passion.
- The teens spent the fall 2023 semester reflecting on the topic of polar regions and why they matter. Arctic Aligned is the culmination of these reflections and experiences, illustrating the teens' feelings about the ever-changing climate. The teens hope to demonstrate their generation’s attitude towards climate change, and their care for the Arctic..
WHEN/WHERE: Trailing (4TH Floor, Brian E. Davies Chugach Gallery), Northern Boarders (Museum Atrium), and Arctic Aligned (First Floor Community Corridor) open to the public May 3, 2024, and will be on view at the Anchorage Museum throughout the summer.
The Anchorage Museum’s summer season hours begin May 1, when the museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with extended hours to 9 p.m. first Fridays through Sept. 30. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on First Friday, general admission to the museum is free to the public.
