TEENS TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE IN ANCHORAGE MUSEUM PROGRAM
CALL FOR ANCHORAGE TEENS TO PARTICIPATE IN CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT
July 26, 2021
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – With scientists estimating the Arctic warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world, the Anchorage Museum is encouraging creative solutions to climate change from the next generation most likely to feel its effects – teens.
Anchorage-area students grades 9-12 interested in fighting climate change are invited to join the Anchorage Museum’s new Teen Climate Communicators program. During a four-month session, students discuss climate change and use their own creativity to raise awareness and find local solutions.
Teen Climate Communicators use museum artworks, objects, and resources to investigate and discuss climate change and work on teen-driven projects to respond to climate change in Anchorage. Activities may include writing an article, hosting a gallery talk, developing a digital resource, or creating an artwork that helps share stories and ideas and inspire problem-solving around climate change.
Teen participants will attend weekly meetings, alternating in-person at the museum and virtually via Zoom. Some work is required outside of regular meetings. Participants also receive volunteer hours and a climate communicator certificate. Additional sessions will meet in the spring and summer, with each focusing on different themes related to climate change; teens may participate in multiple sessions. The Fall 2021 session meets 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept.15 – Dec. 8.
