Kaasteen Jill Meserve
Kaasteen Jill Meserve is a Tlingit artist from Hoonah, Alaska. Many know her as Jill Kaasteen from her social media art pages. She is Chookaneidí Eagle-Brown Bear clan from Hoonah, and from the X̱áay Hít, the Yellow Cedar House, and Tʼaḵdeintaan dachx̱án. She has been beading since middle school. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she developed the business side of her practice and began devoting more time to refining her craft. She has created gifts and commissions for Indigenous creatives in the film and music industries including Bobby Wilson and Sterlin Harjo of the 1491s, and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas. Her work has recently been featured inVogue Magazine, and on the FX hit series Reservation Dogs, and the Peacock TV series Rutherford Falls.Both television shows feature Indigenous directors, writers, actors, and crew. Kaasteen honors traditional formline and Tlingit style beadwork while also incorporating humor and contemporary pop cultural references in her work.
